Focus on: Freddy K

Published on Tuesday 19 July 2022

Italian DJ Freddy K is a beloved vinyl-only DJ and label boss of Key Vinyl. A crate digger of the highest order, Freddy has dedicated his life to dance music since the 90s. We take a look at some of his highlights ahead of his return to E1, this Saturday.

Sound: Although most of Freddy's fans align him with techno and its spawling sub-genres, his taste spans punk, metal and hip hop and bands like Joy Division. Instead of following trends in dance music, Freddy champions solid, well-produced techno rather than flavour-of-the-month style sounds. But he's an open-minded selector who'll play almost anything – apart from 'Bla Bla Bla' by Gigi D'Agostino. If you know, you know.

Key Vinyl: Héctor Oaks, Kaiser and Atonism, amongst many others, have released on Freddy's long-running label. It's the kind of imprint that pushes the more leathery side of techno, favouring straight-up, no BS sounds from established and emerging producers alike.

Krzrzrz: We all had our vice during various lockdowns. For some, it was banana bread. For others, it was Freddy K's Krzrzrz show, hosted on Freddy's Soundcloud and Youtube channels.* Here, Freddy used the platform to ensure his record collection didn't gather dust and broadcast several moods spanning hazy ambient to hard-hitting techno. These days, he invites emerging artists like Léa Occhi and René Wise to guest on the show.

Freddy K will be taking over our warehouse alongside DVS1 and The Lady Machine on July 23rd.
